Talk:Obscenity and Pornography

I think the Repubs have gained a lot on the "values" issue, although it is ill-defined. I would like to see the party grab hold of a well-defined values issue and make it a campaign issue. My thought is Internet pornography. While same sex marriage is a tiny values issue the Repubs focused on, there is not a family in America that is not affected by Internet porn. It is too easy to access for anyone at anytime. While I support the freedom of expression of an adult; we need to limit is access! May I suggest a platform that would require all internet pornography sites to end in either .com.x or simply .x This would allow parents, search engines, software, to easily control access while not denying adults if they choose….Best of luck.

From email suggestion. What do you think?--Brett 15:35, 23 March 2006 (MST)

One major problem is that we can only regulate sites based in the US. The internet really isn't organized in a fashion that allows safety of users or control by any central agency. It is a community, and it was designed only to share information. Thus, the internet is not secure, and by its international nature it really cannot (and _should_ not) be controlled by our government. Perhaps some government-hosted site where people can rate various websites by their content would be a reasonable solution. The more people who used it, the more accurate the information would be (and it fits so well with some of Pete's other ideas). The information (stored in an open format) could then be used by content filtering software set up by parents. --esk
This is already being done by an open source group Dansguardian that forked and went commercial with its blacklist offering at URLBlacklist.com. We use both pieces of software at XMission to provide filtering for minors.--pashdown 08:40, 29 March 2006 (MST)
I also have heard of dansguardian and i belive that it is showing to be a great tool. I know, personally, someone who uses it in his home and once he got his weight system correct it has proven to be a great solution. I belive that the internet should be filtered by the PARENTS and not the government because once the govt has contol, well just look at China!
