pashdownhello Eric
A|home? Would you go over the new guidelines for the chat this week, incase anyone didn't get your email?
EricBHey Pete
pashdownok
pashdownmany people who were new to chat told me they were confused by the disarray that irc lends itself to
pashdownso if you have a question just type a ? like this
pashdown?
pashdownif you have a comment type .
pashdown.
pashdownand i'll call on you
pashdownthen while you have the floor, people have to hold comments and questions until you're done
A|home.
EricB?
pashdownshoot A
A|homeThis will take some getting used to
A|home:)
A|home?
pashdowneric your question?
EricBWhat do you think about bill gates asking to withold all HB1 visas

A|homeWould you fill us in on what you have done sence the last chat?
A|homehttp://politics.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/04/27/2232244
pashdownAfter I got back from vacation, there were two Democratic county conventions to attend and one "forum" because Washington County's convention conflicted with Davis'.
EricBhttp://www.rediff.com/news/2000/feb/07us3.htm
pashdownI went to Weber County and met the Democrats up there and gave a short speech
pashdownThe next night I went to Tooele and was simply introduced
pashdownLast night I was in Washington County at their forum

pashdownI've been working on the website and trying to get the contribution section mapped out
A|homeI wish I would have known about your stop in weber county, I would have loved to have come out
pashdownA, I'll be back :-)
A|homealright
pashdownEric, let me look at the link
A|homea callender of planed dates would be great on your website as well
pashdownGood idea
EricBOrrin hatch is one of the leaders pusing for MORE H1-B visa
pashdownI will be at the Democratic Convention on May 7th
reridingI'm wondering how you feel about patent "reform" and Hatch appointed to oversee it, and software patents in general
pashdownHang on Burt, I'll address that after this H1-B thing.
pashdownI have a hard time believing there aren't enough high-tech workers in the United States already looking for jobs.
pashdownWhat I'm guessing is that there are a lot of corps looking for cheap high-tech workers.
EricBI see the H1-B for tech workers as a brain drain/training our competitors
pashdownCompetitors where?
EricBAsia
-:- elgie [www-data@pashdown.org] has joined #pashdown
EricBIndia
pashdownAh, I think its going to be a rough road to try and brain-drain Asia and India :/
pashdownI would side with the protection of American tech workers over outsourcing and imports.
EricBIf we train out of country works, and then they leave they take our tech with them.
EricBscuse me, workers
reriding.
pashdownBurt you have a comment?
reridingchina and india have already decided to try to take over tech industry
pashdownYes, there is no doubt that much of the rest of the world has seen where the paydirt is in the future.
reridingthey just met to discuss is in the last few weeks
reridings/si/it
pashdownI think the US needs to realize this more and try to start focusing on science/technology at the roots of education.
EricB:-) ok I'm done
pashdownBurt you asked about patent reform
reridingyes
pashdownI've written something on this at http://pashdown.org/issues/uspto.html
reridingok
reridingand a somewhat related subject, 90 year copyrights and orphaned works
pashdownhttp://www.copyright.gov/orphan/comments/OW0048-Ashdown.pdfhttp://www.copyright.gov/orphan/comments/OW0048-Ashdown.pdf
pashdownbah, hang on
pashdownhttp://www.copyright.gov/orphan/comments/OW0048-Ashdown.pdf
pashdownmy comments to the copyright office on orphan works
-:- bikrguy [www-data@pashdown.org] has joined #pashdown
pashdownin regards to copyright, i'd like to see it brought in line with what i've suggested for patents
reridingperhaps a return to 19+19 years, or maybe a small $1.00 fee for renewal to show insterest
pashdowni would say that would be good but renewal by the author/inventor only
reridingok I just read what you said...I think I'm agreeing more and more with your positions
pashdowni think there is a lot of societal benefit to be had by works falling out of copyright and patents expiring
pashdownbut inventors and authors have a right to be protected too
pashdownany other questions?
reridingnot from me
elgie?
pashdownelgie go ahead
bikrguy?
elgieHey Pete, it's Loretta.  Sorry got here late.  How did the meetings with the counties go (Tooele, Washington, etc)
pashdownThey all went really well.  What is interesting to me is hearing the stories about candidates who did *not* get out past Salt Lake county to campaign.
elgieI know!
pashdownI think there is a lot to be said for positive and present action in these other counties.
pashdownI had a great time in St George yesterday and it really excited me for seeing the rest of the state.  People love to show visitors around.
pashdownbikrguy your question?
bikrguyI was curious.  give the Prez's speach tonight.  U know to know that a lot of younger people feel that they will never see a dime of SS.  would you ever back a measure to do away with it?
pashdowneliminate it or privatize it?
pashdowni guess it doesn't matter, i wouldn't support either replacing social security
bikrguyeliminate it all together.  for the younger generation.  I feel that we would be willing to bankroll it just to do away with it, at least a lot of people I've discussed this with
EricB.
bikrguyobviously the AARP crown is totaly against this.
reriding.
pashdownI think social security has been a successful program through its existence and it needs simple adjustments rather than elimination.
pashdownThings like moving the cap up and adjusting for inflation could extend its lifetime beyond the 2046 date.
pashdownEric, your comment?
EricBWhat we really need is more workers, more educated works contributing to SS
pashdownI agree with that.
pashdownBurt?
bikrguy.
reridingmoving the cap up to $200K would fix the problem...how many people made 200K last time SS was reformed...25 years ago
pashdownbikrguy?
bikrguybut given the contentious state of things in the country, do you really feel that a measure like that would pass through congress?
pashdownto adjust the cap on social security?
pashdownI think that is easier to push through than entire overhaul.
reriding2046 is just an estimate anyway...CBO says 2052 now, or maybe even later
bikrguythat and the age thing.  U have all these Baby Boomers hitting the cap.  Do you honestly think they will vote for a cap increase as well as an age increse?
pashdownI think the boomers won't care because they'll be drawing off social security rather than contributing it.
bikrguy.
pashdownWhat is the current cap, $120K?
pashdowngo ahead bikr
bikrguyI simply wanted to get an idea of where it was you stood.  I'm finished. Thank you for answering my questions.

pashdownI would like to see Social Security adjusted, not overhauled.
pashdownAnyone else with a question?
-:- Web358 [www-data@pashdown.org] has joined #pashdown
Clarity? sorry I'm late and I don't know if someone has asked this before, but what is your opinion on the electronic voting machines?
pashdownClarity, I think we need open, or at least auditable source machines with paper trails.  I tend to favor the machine + optical ballot method.
pashdownI also think it would be worthwhile to find out why Canada is able to use paper and pencil and still finish their national elections in 4 hours.
ClarityThank you. One more thing since you mentioned open source - are you familiar with www.openvoting.org the open voting consortium and the machine they've designed?
pashdownI have heard of it, but I haven't used it or looked at the code.
ClarityI TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU THERE!
Clarity(on Canada)
pashdownIs Utah evaluating the openvoting.org machine?
Web358?what would you tell me, as a Utah republican, that would encourage me to vote for you
Clarity. no they say they were too late with the RFP but I hear from Open Voting that wasn't the case. I'm not completely clear on what happened. I do know Utah County is looking at alternatives.
pashdownWeb358, the primary thing I can tell you is that I will be here in Utah listening to you more than I will be in Washington listening to the people who have given me money.
pashdownI have a very strong stance on personal privacy and being fiscally conservative.
Web358.a good answer
pashdownI have tried to run my business in a fashion that protects my customers' privacy and unfortunately, I think that is rare.
elgie?
pashdownWeb358, can I ask for your thoughts on healthcare?
reriding?
pashdownelgie, your question?
elgienot really a question...I was at a couple of conventions for local officials.  As of last week, the Lt. Gov had narrowed down the selection of voting machine to two vendors
elgieneither had a paper trail
elgiewe were able to test them both
pashdownthat is discouraging, i'd say paper trail should be the minimum
elgieI'm not sure if a decision has been made, but I know that both companies were in town last week presenting
pashdownburt your question?
reridingwhat would you think about a heavy gasoline tax to take gas up to $4-5 / gallon to finance the oil wars?  to force a search for sustainable and cleaner alternatives?
pashdownI would be against that because I think it would slam our economy too hard.  Think of goods transport and transportation.
pashdownHowever, I think there are solutions right in front of us.
reriding(we pay taxes for the war anyway, they're just not built into the price of the oil yet)
pashdownAgreed, it seems to be gradually getting there.
pashdownI heard that you can get up to 400 mpg with a hybrid depending on the fuel you're using.
pashdownI'd like to see our government getting behind fusion too, because it appears that the ITER project is going to work.
pashdownITER being the fusion reactor being planned for either Japan or France.
* reriding/#pashdown wonders why one needs a tax break to make 400mpg more attractive
pashdownDo you mean a tax break for the car makers?
reridingno, tax breaks for "consumers" who buy fuel efficient cars, recently proposed by the President
pashdownAh.  It seems that Toyota doesn't need any help selling the Prius.
EricB.
pashdownGo ahead Eric
EricBCurrent hybrids have issues, they actually are getting marginally better mpg than conventional engines
EricBmainly because of terrain
reriding.
EricBthe DOT tests them on a track, not real world conditions
EricBbut it's getting better :-) <done>
pashdownBurt?
reridingas a UTA rider, I can say the hybrid busses have much better acceleration than the diesels...I don't know about their efficiency
reriding;)
pashdownI'd like to see more use of biofuels like ethanol done.  It would seem to me that biofuels have the potential to reinvigorate American farms.
bikrguy?
pashdownGo ahead bikrguy
bikrguyWhat is your take on the Fed's water policy in the west, ie farming water intensive crops in the desert.  I'm in Phoenix and just outside of Phoenix I see alfalfa fields and up north there is a PRAWN farm.
bikrguy.  I would like to note that I live both in SLC and phoenix
pashdownPrawns in the desert sounds pretty ridiculous, but I wonder how it compares to an alfalfa farm?
pashdownI think there needs to be a more balanced approach to water policy.
EricB.
pashdownI don't know what the answer is, because farmers need to farm, but they couldn't pay what we do in the city and stay in business I'm sure.
pashdownEric your comment?
EricBjust a link to hybrid stuff http://www.wired.com/news/autotech/0,2554,63413,00.html
pashdownthanks
EricBnp
pashdownI've heard some of the water debates on the radio and I'm still not sure who is right.
pashdownHowever, if it keeps raining, we're going to have to find some place else to pump it. :-)
bikrguy.  To bad ole Norm's pumps aren't functional out in the west desert
pashdownI was in memory grove this afternoon and it looked like you could raft on city creek.
bikrguy;-)
pashdownYep

pashdownThanks for coming tonight, and thanks for using the moderation format.
pashdownYes Burt, I'll put them on the chat page on my website if they have any content.
pashdownI'll get this one up in about an hour.
